Chapter 11- Analyzing

Compare Katniss to one of the careers.

  1. Katniss and the careers came from very different backgrounds. Katniss grew up in a poor district that had very little food. All of her focus was on survival and hated the idea of the Hunger Games. The Careers, on the other hand, grew up in wealthier districts where they were trained to win in the Hunger Games since they were young. These different childhoods brought around different attitudes toward the Hunger Games. Katniss was disgusted by the Hunger Games and was only there for Prim. The Careers volunteered to be tributes because they wanted the glory and the wealth. Katniss and the Careers are similar in that they all volunteered to be tributes and they are also all of the strongest tributes in the arena. Other than those two similarities, I don't think Katniss and the Careers have much in common.

  2. The Hunger Games are viewed in entirely different ways in the differing districts of Panem. Some districts see the Hunger Games as a way to assert their pride and wealth, while for other districts, the games are little more than a mandatory task. The career tributes train and hope to be called for the games. Katniss observes that she is much smaller and less well fed than the other tributes from more desirable districts. She looks smaller and less powerful, but really Katniss has the upper hand because she has had to struggle to survive her entire life. She actively uses survival skills at home, and the career tributes have never had to do that.

  3. I categorize the Hunger Game tributes into three main categories; The Careers, The Strong and The Weak. Of course, the careers are completely ready for this. They have been training forever. The strong are the ones who have gotten prepared "by accident". They have made themselves strong by living their everyday normal lives which is where Katniss fits in. By hunting, she has become strong and gained trapping and killing abilities. Then, the weak are the ones who have never held an axe in their life. They have only worked in fields or have done nothing at all. Katniss was just as prepared as the other careers or more because she has had actual practice killing unlike the careers who have just practiced. Katniss and the careers differ only because the careers WANT to be a tribute because they think that they can win. Of course, they don't know that some of the other tributes have had practice because it was illegal.

  4. I like the way you chose to categorize the tributes, Olivia. However, the Careers are strong as well. I think the Careers are physically strong and you category "the strong" are more mentally prepared. "The weak" have a lesser advantage because of the lack of food, not lack of work. everyone in Panem is worked and starved (except the people in the Capitol, ofcourse.)

  5. Katniss vs. career... hmm... Katniss has lived her life hunting and surviving on her own, this gives her an advantage in the arena. One of the careers, let's say the girl from district one, has been well fed all her life. She has never really needed to fend for herself. However, the careers earned their nickname because they were unofficially trained pregames. this gives district one girl an advantage. She knows how to use most any weapon likely to be found in the cornucopia whereas Katniss is good with a knife and excellent with a bow, but that's it. If I were a sponsor I would, most likely bet on one of the careers over Katniss.
