Katniss, after giving a few encouraging words, headed off toward the stream. I stayed by the first fire to wait. I sat there for a few minutes and whistled to the mockingjays. When I thought Katniss was far enough away, I began to light the first of three fires. at first it didn't light because the wood was so green but I got it eventually. As soon as the fire was lit I ran my fastest to get to the next one. Soon after arriving, I had the second fire lit and smoking. again I ran to the next fire. as i was running I heard a distant, but still thunderous boom. Smiling, I thought "Katniss". when I got there I began with the kindling to get it going but it wouldn't start. I tried to work faster but I couldn't get the fire to light. Nothing I tried worked. I even tried one of the matches Katniss had given me just in case. Then I heard them. The careers were coming! I ran from them for a while, trying to lose them by weaving through the trees. Slowly it began to get dark. I could no longer hear all the careers, it sounded like only one of them was after me now. I climbed a tree to try to escape him and maybe get some rest. I climbed high and slept through most of the night. I woke with the sun and began to form a plan to kill the still sleeping career who I now could identify as the boy from district 1.
I am running through the forest. Katniss and I have joined up and so far, it has been my best decision yet. Katniss has just left to blow up the food supply at the lake. If we succeed, we will have a serious advantage over the Careers. I come to a stop at the first camp fire. I scrape the flint and a spark sizzles along the dead leaves on top of the fire. I watch the dry wood blaze and turn away with satisfaction. The plan continues to go accordingly at the next fire. It is at the third that trouble arises. a run into the clearing just in time to hear the leaves bristle under the feet of the enemy. With a jolt of fear, I cling to the closest tree and climb to a high limb. When I feel safe, I look down. Below me, the boy from district one is examining my unlit fire. He looks up, searching the boughs overhead, but I slink into the shadows in the thong of the branch so that he cannot see me. The boy looks around one last time and turns back the way he came. When he is out of earshot, I drop to the forest floor. I take a moment to decide what the next step should be. I need to find Katniss, but I also want to know what the boy is up to. I decide to follow the boy. As I slip between the shadows of the protective trees, I listen for the boy. I pause for a moment because I can no longer hear the boy's heavy tromping. A startled cry slips through my lips as a net envelopes me.
I glanced back at Katniss as we parted ways and then proceeded through the thick forest on light feet. I was excited, but I was nervous. If we made a single mistake, we could both end up dead. I willed myself not to think of that. Coming around the last brace of trees, I paused. Nothing there. Katniss would be at the supplies by now. I bent to the forest floor and crouched by the pile of sticks and dry wood. My flint sparks as it dances off the rock, and the fire sets quickly. Now I am ready. The plan echoes in my head, and I imagine myself watching the distant explosion. Now for the next fire. I scamper through the trees and whistle to myself. A branch breaks. I swing around as my hand instinctively comes to my mouth in fear. Nothing. Adrenaline rushes through me as I half run to the fire. I light it quietly, and make my way to the next. Again, I crouched, and scraped my flint against a nearby rock. Another branch. I spun around. Leaves twitched and birds stared. I turned slowly back to the fire, scraping again. Leaves rustle. I dropped the flint and gambled at the tall tree near the fire. Whoever is here has come for me. I crawl slowly and try hard to be silent. My heavy breathing slows as I reach the top branches. I clung to the trunk and sat for a long while. The fire! I scamper down the tree, pausing only for a young squirrel. She crosses carefully, and I want to whistle by I do not. I cautiously pick up the flint again, and I listen for a mockingjay. None appear. I finally get a spark as the boy steps out from the trees.
I start running towards the spot Katniss and I had planned for our first fire. I was ready for this, I mean, we had a plan after all. Nothing could possibly go wrong and I don't want to think about what would happen if it did. I just reached my first spot for the fire but as usual, the wood is damp so it takes me a minute to light it. I then, without hesitating, run to my next spot, and that fire is lit pretty easily because of the sun shining through the branches. Just as I am about to take off to my third spot I here a crack, of course it's just the wind or the fire. But I must hurry to my next fire. I notice how nice these branches are so I neatly pile them to make the fire. I hear the branch crackle then see it spark but it doesn't catch fire quick enough! I hear the Careers! I quickly dive among the roots of the nearby tree and shelter myself with ferns. I can't see the careers but i know they are close by and as the sun dims I know I must get sleep and must not move.
I wake with a start as I feel myself being pulled out by the leg by someone as I soon see is the boy from district 1. "KATNISS!!!!........"
wait...Rue wasn't there. Are you talking about the carrying out of the plan?
ReplyDeleteyes. she will see it differently since she was not doing the same thing
