I believe Katniss volunteered for Prim because of her supreme love of her sister and her need to protect Prim's innocence. Katniss would not be able to stand seeing her sister starve, or be killed. As well as the danger of Prim's death, Katniss didn't want her sister to become a killer. No matter what the cost. Katniss may have thought that she had a better chance in the arena than Prim did. I don't believe I have ever had anything close to the type of bond that exists between Prim and Katniss. I, of course, have a bond with my sister but not the same type. I attribute this partially to the fact that she is almost two years older than I am.
I agree with Owen about Katniss' love for Prim. I also think that Katniss would not have been so apt to volunteer if her father was still alive. When her father died, Katniss was forced to become the strength and money maker for the family. Her mother withdrew from the world, making the bond between Prim and Katniss stronger. I think Prim and Katniss have had to stick together to survive and Katniss couldn't imagine seeing her pet die on television. The only way I can apply this to my life it through my cat Peeves. Everyone hates Peeves. I suppose she deserves a little bit of the ill will toward her when she bites and scratches, but I think she is the most beautiful creature in the world. She is currently fighting with our new kitten and everyone sides with the kitten. I am the only one there to defend my cat. In a way this is similar to Katniss and Prim's relationship. Katniss and I both have to look out for the ones we love and defend them from harm.
When Katniss and Prim's father was killed in a mining accident, their mother spiraled into a deep state depression. Prim and Katniss would soon be sent to a community home, where they would be cared for, but poorly. Katniss rose to the plate and began to gather and hunt food for her family. She devoted her entire life to keeping her sister and her mother alive. I think Katniss felt sort of a maternal as well as sisterly love for Prim. Katniss, for a while at least, stood in her mother's place, and during that time she began to protect Prim, with her actions as well as her heart. When Prim's name was called at the reaping, Katniss knew a part of her would die with Prim if Prim went to the Hunger Games. Katniss volunteered to save herself, not only Prim. As for a sisterly bond, mine is nonexistent. I love my sister, I really do, but I just do not have a connection with her as Katniss has a connection with Prim. My brother and I, however, do have a very close bond. If my brother, or come to think of it, my sister, were drawn at the reaping, I would volunteer myself. I feel that it is just my duty as the eldest.
Katniss loved Prim. That is very clear. But, Katniss is also very protective of Prim. She is the one who has practically raised her and she knows that the only way to save her sister is to volunteer to replace her in the Games. Katniss is also like a mom to Prim. Prim loves her and worries about her. Those two could survive anything as long as the stick together. In my life, my friends are like my Prim and my best friends are like my Katniss. I care for my friends and look after them and would do anything for them. My bestfriends, however, I look up to. I would not be where i am without them right now.
I wonder if the protective element that is part of the love from Katniss is also in Prim's love for her. Olivia, you sounded like your relationships with your friends and your best friends are different in that you are the vulnerable one in the eyes of your best friends and your friends are the ones who need looking after in your eyes. In my experiences, even if I'm mentally stronger than someone I cared about, he or she has always returned my care in some way. Even my cat, Peeves, gives me her affection and her trust. I think Prim gives Katniss affection and trust as well and without which, she would be less strong.
