Chapter 6 - Understanding

Interpret the connection between Katniss and Peeta. At this point in the story, how does Katniss feel toward Peeta and vice versa?

    Katniss and Peeta have been connected since they were young. Katniss was on the brink of starvation and Peta gave her hope. He didn't know her, but he still gave her a loaf of bread. Now that Katniss and Peeta have been picked as tributes from district 12, Katniss is worried about having to be in the arena together. Peeta is showing kindness to Katniss even though they are doomed to kill each other. This behavior is making Katniss feel nervous and uncomfortable. I sense a romance is to come.

    Katniss wants to trust Peeta because of the help he gave her when she was younger. Meanwhile, Katniss doesn't want to trust or befriend Peeta because she knows she may have to kill him in the arena. these conflicting emotions create a love-hate relationship. she deep down really likes Peeta but she tells herself that he is being a tricksy hobbit and that he is out to get her.

    Katniss is curious about Peeta. She has known of him forever but she doesn't really know him or his ways. She sounds like she likes him but she doesn't want to and she knows she cant get to close, but she knows she cant stay to far away. Katniss doesn't care about the other contestants, she only mentions Peeta which shows a bond, even if not a close or good one.

    Peeta and Katniss have a sort of understood bond. They both feel that they owe somehting to the other, but each of them is confused by the other. Katniss, I think, feels that she needs to compensate for the kindness Peeta showed toward her. Peeta is attracted to Katniss. Katniss does not realize this, nor does she accept it when she learns he does. Katniss really does not want to have a connection this close to the game time because she knows that she will have to kill Peeta.
